"I want to want Thee!"

I’ve been thinking a lot about “hungering for God”. About being desperate for Him and thirsting for His presence. I truly long to always thirst for God. I know we must confess, repent, fast, pray and put our selves in a place of obedience where God can move in our hearts. But, where do we “truly” begin. For me, the starting place has always been simply asking God to make my heart hungry. A.W. Tozer prayed an awesome prayer:

“O God, the Triune God, I want to want Thee; I long to be filled with longings; I thirst to be made more thirsty still. Show me Thy glory, I pray thee, so that I may know Thee indeed.”

So, we ask and we believe in our hearts He will create a hunger in us. Jesus says in John 16:24, “I tell you the truth, my father will give you whatever you ask in my Name. Until now you have not asked for anything in my Name. Ask and you will receive and your joy will be complete (or made full).”

Is God so limited that we must do all that well before he can move in our hearts? Please, say it isn't so. Did Saul long for Jesus, when he was confronted and struck blind in being called to preach the gospel to the Gentiles? I don't think so.

Jesus completed the necessary work and sat down at the right hand of the Father. He lives to make intercession for us. What is the work he requires of us? To believe, and to rest in his finished work. We have no hope of pleasing him outside this resting. All the confessing, squeezing our heart to try to make it want what it doesn't will never, ever please him. Rest. It is finished. He has a direction for this moment of your life and will tell you what it is and will give you the power to do it. You don't have to pry it out of him. Sometimes it will be flashy, but often it will be quiet and dull and rich as we lay down our lives. Please stop slapping yourself and accept that you already have everything you need for life and godliness. You don't have to make your heart something else for God to move. He's big and he knows you are small.
